Designing for the User: The Philosophy Behind the New Hypori Client App

By Brett Norris, Senior Product Manager, Hypori

At Hypori, our mission has always been straightforward: get users onboarded quickly and keep them securely connected without friction. The core job of our client app hasn't changed – the workspace still runs inside the controlled environment, no organizational data lands on the device. What changed is how naturally you navigate and how little friction stands between you and your work.

I’m thrilled to introduce the newly redesigned Hypori client app. We’ve rebuilt it from the ground up which allows us to deploy across various device types with unprecedented ease. But what you’ll notice first isn't the code under the hood; it’s the completely reimagined user interface.

Here is a look at the design philosophy that drove this update and what it means for your daily workflow.

Keeping You Connected: Staying in the Flow

Because the primary job of the client app is to keep you connected, we wanted to ensure that experience is as resilient as possible.

The app now tries to keep you connected, even when you've navigated away from it (to take a phone call or write a text message on your personal device) or lock your device. It will remember your connection state and when you return, it will try to bring you back to where you left off. This means less time waiting to reconnect and more time staying productive in your workflow.

Intuitive by Design: The Layered Approach

When we set out to redesign the UI, our primary goal was to make it modern, intuitive, and explorable. We wanted an app that didn't just function well but felt natural to use.

To achieve this, we adopted a layered approach to our UI elements. By stacking and color-coding different components, the app intuitively communicates what is happening as elements appear and disappear. You shouldn't have to guess where you are in the app or what a specific screen is asking you to do; the visual hierarchy guides you effortlessly.

Ergonomics First: The Action Bar

Think about how you hold your phone. Most of us navigate with our thumbs, yet so many apps force us to stretch across the screen to reach critical controls. We decided to fix that.

We’ve introduced a dynamic "Action Bar" anchored at the bottom of the screen. This means you no longer have to stretch your thumbs to manage your connection, access app information, or tweak settings. The Action Bar expands dynamically to show onboarding flows and app settings, keeping everything you need right at your fingertips.

Guided Onboarding and In-App Support

The onboarding process will feel familiar to our existing users, but we’ve refined it to be much more guided and informative.

You might notice something missing in this new version: help links. That was a deliberate choice. We believe that an app should be smart enough to explain what is happening in real-time and help you out of a bind directly within the interface. Instead of sending you to an external webpage to read a manual, the app now provides contextual guidance exactly when you need it.

Empowering the User: Themes, Views, and Transparency

Modernization means giving users choices. We know that personalization matters, which is why we’ve introduced Themes. Whether you are a die-hard "dark mode" fan or prefer the crispness of "light mode," we’ve got you covered. The app defaults to your system theme, but you can easily force it to your preference in the settings.

We also tackled how you view your accounts. Why show a list if you only have one account? We’ve introduced a toggle between a List view (for our power users with multiple accounts) and a Poster view (perfect for users with a single account).

Finally, we wanted to provide absolute transparency. Informational, warning, and error messages are now clearly displayed either inside the account card or right above the Action Bar. We’ve also made the "Deliver Notifications" toggle a live feature. When you flip the switch, it queries the platform in real-time to confirm your registration status. No more guessing—if it says it's on, you are registered on the backend.

Built for the Future

For the power users out there, we haven't forgotten you. We’ve added a "Detail Mode" in the app settings that provides deeper insights into the connection process, and we plan to pack even more features into this mode in the future.

We’ve also streamlined our Bug Report feature (formerly "Send Logs"), making it accessible directly from the app settings without needing to successfully provision an account first.

The new Hypori client app is more than just a fresh coat of paint. It’s a reflection of our commitment to building tools that respect your time, your workflow, and your thumbs. We can't wait for you to get your hands on it.
